Future Innovations in Healthcare Data

You know what is common between sound Product Management practices and sound Health Care practices? They are both “Outcome-based”. You know what else is common? They both value evidence and results, i.e. data. When it comes to US healthcare data, we are sitting on a gold mine!

In a recent conversation with one of our Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services customers, I came across the report titled ‘Crossing the Quality Chasm”. https://lnkd.in/gTbi2z7Z Though 20 years old, this report lists out the outcomes a sound healthcare system should deliver –

  • Safe—avoiding injuries to patients from the care that is intended to help them.
  • Effective—providing services based on scientific knowledge to all who could benefit and refraining from providing services to those not likely to benefit (avoiding underuse and overuse).
  • Patient-centered—providing care that is respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs, and values and ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions.
  • Timely—reducing waits and sometimes harmful delays for both those who receive and those who give care.
  • Efficient—avoiding waste, in particular waste of equipment, supplies, ideas, and energy.
  • Equitable—providing care that does not vary in quality because of personal characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, geographic location, and socioeconomic status.

20 years later, we still have ways to go! We now have the tools and techniques to move the healthcare system closer to the desired outcomes. We just need the will and imagination!
